How Strong Are Pocket Hole Joints… REALLY?

How strong are pocket hole screw joints in woodworking projects? Can they actually hold up under real stress — or are they just a shortcut for beginners? In this video, I put a pine table built entirely with pocket screws to the test… by destroying it with a sledgehammer to find out what these joints are really made of. I built the table using big box store wood and a Kreg pocket hole jig.

Whether you’re a beginner in woodworking or a seasoned DIY builder, you’ve probably used or considered pocket holes. I’ll show you how they perform under everyday use, side loads, and then — full destruction. We’ll compare joints that were just screwed versus those that may have had glue, and I’ll walk through what failed, what held, and what you need to know before building your next project with pocket screws.
